Installation and Access
Adding "Advanced Forums" to the Course
To integrate "Advanced Forums" into a course, the instructor must access the main menu of the course. Within this menu, there is the option to add new tools and applications to the course environment.
Each instance of "Advanced Forums" must be created individually for each course activity where it is desired to be used. This provides flexibility to adapt the forums to the specific needs of each section of the course.
Viewing and Editing the Activity
Once the "Advanced Forums" activity is added, it appears in the main content area of the course. Here, the teacher has the ability to:
- Move the activity within the course for better organization.
- Change availability, controlling when students can access the forum.
- Edit the title, description, and visibility of the forum as needed.
Here the activity is presented once edited, so that it appears like any other content in the course.
Main Features
Forum Management
"Advanced Forums" allows the creation of specific forums for particular topics or discussions within the course. Each forum can contain multiple discussion threads, allowing thematic organization and easy navigation.
Administrative Tools for Teachers
Teachers have various administrative tools to effectively manage the forums:
- Forum Structure Import: This function allows teachers to copy the structure of existing forums from other courses, facilitating the replication of discussion structures from other courses.
- Subscription Management: Users can choose to subscribe to course forums, so they will receive messages with updates from them.
- Usage Reports: Provides detailed statistics on interaction in the forums, including data by forum and by student. Reports can be downloaded in formats such as Excel or PDF.
- Forum Content Download: This tool allows teachers to download the content of the forums, with options to filter by user, date, and specific topics. This option allows both the storage of the forums and a different format to facilitate reading and correction.
- Creation of New Forums: Teachers can create new forums, defining parameters such as title, description, visibility, grading rules, and more.
Configuration options include:
- Title and Description of the Forum.
- Visibility Options (following standards like those of Blackboard Learn).
- Rules for grading discussions.
- Subscription settings and editing permissions.
- Limitations on the number of messages and their length.
Once the forum is created, its characteristics can be edited or new discussion threads can be added, each with its own set of parameters and settings.
User Interface and Search Functionality
"Advanced Forums" includes a clear user interface and an efficient filtering system. These tools allow users to quickly search for and locate specific forums or threads by name, title, or even comments within the threads.
Interaction in Discussion Threads
Within each thread, users find an organized interface that displays:
- A breadcrumb navigation bar to orient the user within the application.
- The number of posts made in the thread.
- Options to refresh the view of the thread, collapse or expand messages, and add new messages.
- Display of replies, where conversations are shown indented for clear tracking of the discussion.
Message Management
When creating a new message, users use a rich text editor. This editor facilitates the inclusion of different formats and media in messages. Users can reply, quote existing messages, or even hide replies to simplify viewing.
Thread Administration
In the main interface of "Advanced Forums", users can perform actions such as editing threads, marking them as read, locking, or deleting threads according to the needs of the course and discussion.
Grading and Evaluation of Forums
If configured, forums can be evaluated and graded, allowing deeper integration with the course assessment system.
